Piemonte
The Piemonte region is located in the northwest corner of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland, in the area around the city of Torino. While not the champion of volume, it is surely first among the regions in class and notoriety. There is a great emphasis on quality across the board, and the Piedmont contains more DOC-DOCG zones (50) than any other region. The famous reds of Barolo and Barbaresco are made from the native Nebbiolo grape, while other varietals such as Barbera and Dolcetto are more commonly planted throughout the region. For the whites, the sparlking, sweeter wines Asti Spumante and Moscato d’Asti are wildly popular. On the drier side, the Cortese grape produces some of the most well-regarded whites in the country.
