Il Borro

Sustainably farmed

Il Borro’s vines grow on the Valdarno hills at the foot of the Pratomagno Mountains, within a microclimate of mild winters, a perfect place for vineyards. A great lake covered the entire valley during the Pliocene epoch leaving an enduring legacy in the chemical composition of the soil, ideal for making fine wine. The bedrock is sandstone, above a base of a loam rich soil on a sandy clay matrix. A poor soil but ideal for the needs of the vine.

Ferruccio Ferragamo to initiate a winemaking revival at Il Borro in 1995. Careful analysis guided every decision, from the choice of grape to the clones and rootstocks, nothing was left to chance. Grape varieties, such as Sangiovese, and those of the “Tuscan tradition,” such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grow side by side adapting perfectly to the variability of the soil. Eighty-five hectares are under vine, 300 to 500 metres above sea level, divided between five varieties of grapes to extract the very best wines from our precious terroir.

Alessandro dal Borro 2015

Only made in magnums, the 2015 Alessandro dal Borro plays homage to the Syrah grape that thrives in this special corridor of land in Tuscany near Arezzo. This wine was first produced in 2011, and this 2015 vintage saw 2,792 numbered magnums released. Like the portly figure (the nobleman after whom this wine is named) depicted on the front label, this is a full-bodied and robust expression with those deeply savory aromas of mesquite, spice, leather and black pepper that are so specific to Syrah. The core of the wine shows rich blackberry fruit. The wine ages in all new barrique for 18 months, although future editions might see a portion of the wine in botte grande as well. Alessandro dal Borro is exuberant, generous, open and absolutely expressive.

Chardonnay Lamelle 2018

The 2018 Chardonnay La Melle is a fresh and simple wine with bright intensity and purity, achieved thanks to simple winemaking in stainless steel vats. The wine offers fresh citrus notes, white peach and plenty of chalky minerality at the back for easy-drinking pleasure. No malolactic fermentation occurs. The first vintage this wine was made was 2006, and today some 30,000 bottles are released.

Pian di Nova 2017

This is an entry-level blend of mostly Syrah with a smaller part Sangiovese. Il Borro’s 2017 Pian di Nova is a well-balanced wine with the softness and savory character of the French grape framed by the racy acidity of the Tuscan variety. This was a hot and dry vintage; however, the integrity of the fruit remains intact. Perhaps you get a little extra softness and rich concentration on the finish with black cherry, blackberry and soft spice.

Toscano Rosso 2016

This is the estate’s flagship wine and is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Petit Verdot once played a small supporting role in the blend, but that grape has since been removed because it left too strong a signature. The 2016 Il Borro is a seamless, full-bodied red wine that presents an A- list aromatic presentation with dark fruit and plum followed by savory spice, leather and tobacco. The quality of the fruit is sweet and bright, but there is also a distinct mineral note to the wine that contrasts the sweetness with saltiness. The tannins are well integrated and there is enough acidity to lift the entire flavor profile of this beautiful wine. Some 32,000 bottles were made.

Sangiovese Polissena 2016

Sangiovese grapes for this wine originate from the same vineyard that makes the amphorae-aged Petruna. However, the 2016 Polissena is a more conventional expression of the Tuscan grape, with fermentation in stainless steel and 12 months of barrel age in second and third year barrique. The wine is delicate yet firm, aromatic yet elegant. The bouquet offers wild berry aromas with black fruit, spice, tar and moist potting soil. There is a distinct unifying line that connects all the wines made at Il Borro, especially the Sangiovese-based bottles.
