        About Vinkara

sustainably farmed / woman owned

Surrounded by distant mountains the Vinkara estate has two hundred acres of vineyards along a river just outside the quiet and humble village of Kalecik. Planted at 2000 ft above sea level the vineyards span rocky hills and plateaus strewn with sage trees and other endemic flora and fauna. They experience cold snowy winters and hot dry summers due to the elevation and inland location.

Annual average precipitation is fairly low with rainfall mostly occurring during the spring and fall; monthly mean temperatures range from 32 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 73 degrees Fahrenheit in July with an annual mean of 53 degrees Fahrenheit. Vinkara’s vineyards experience a unique microclimate due to their proximity to the moderating river and surrounding hills.

Soils are comprised of sand and clay and limestone with high mineral content balanced in PH rich in calcium and excellent for drainage. All fruit utilized in the production of Vinkara’s wines are estate grown on vertical trellises. Grapes are green harvested early in the season and varieties are all fermented separately Harvest usually begins in mid-September. Natural yeasts are used for select varieties.
